Life and Death

When I was in Tucson a year ago, I posted about a prayer request made at the end of a service I attended there.  The question and prayer was over the sister of one of the parishioners whom was terminal and they did not want her to suffer – so could we pray for their expedited death!

The pastor commented that perhaps the most compassionate response we have in terminal situations was to pray for God to shorten their pain by taking them home quickly.

I was wary of this, as human live is precious to the God I know.  Yes, we are broken, we do die, but life is what God has given us and He alone determines our days.

To the pastor’s credit he was running a suicide prevention program in the community and I thought, “Well, if he is working for life, maybe he is believing life is in God’s hand….”

I was stunned to read on the internet he committed suicide in November.  And absolutely no reason has appeared in print yet.

How can you kill yourself when you are a pastor?  How could you not have considered the impact of example you are setting?  How could you not know better, having been running a suicide prevention program for years? For Pete’s Sake!!!!!

 I am left wordless!

But, you know, there is a church full of people in Tucson hurting right now and he did have a family.  You might want to lift them all up in prayer…

You Are Warned

Like this sign? It screams, how stupid are you? Think about this - who is going to fine you $200? You touch the wire, you are dead. Hello!

But, you know, probably most of the people I know are exactly like this! Yeah, somehow they are going to be the exception in life to every rule God has laid down for us. They can live their lives as they want, consequence free - after all, death only happens to those whom are not careful touching those wires. Right? There is a loop hole to this rule, somewhere. Right?

Then, somehow, it is suddenly a vengeful and hate filled God who comes down on them to correct them. Huh? How many warning signs does it take? How obvious does God have to be to make them understand? How badly injured must one become before they open their eyes to the fact that we live in a world of rules. Break the rules - well, there are consequences whether or not you think they are fair! Whether or not you think they make sense.  Whether or not you think they apply to you or now!

Whether we are talking about "natural" occurrences, national disasters or even personal catastrophes - man is paying for his disobedience and choices before God. Sometimes the payment is death, other times injury. Always it is God attempting to call His wayward creation back.....

You were already warned, after all. You should have known. There are few surprises if you can read the signs along the way.

Murder By Gossip

This post is hard to write, as it strikes far too close to home, and I do fear it being read by those whom were involved - as you will understand later…...

The pastor had just finished the opening prayer, when a lady I knew all too well stood up and asked if she could speak.  This was not uncommon, we often had testimonies, praises and prayer requests pop up this way.  We were a laid back church.  Now, I had known this woman for many years, she was a Swedish model back in the 1940’s through the early 1960’s, her daughter was also a model in the 1970’s, and she was one of the few people whom ever had been in a position to actually hurt me, and she had - as no one else has ever been able to since.….

She began to tell her tale of woe, through clinched teeth at first:

“My sister married someone I did not approve of.  He was a fisherman and he had no place in our family.  So, I began to express my disdain for him every chance I had with my mother, my sister and the rest of the family.”

Silence.

“After 20 years, my sister finally agreed with me I was right, he is a loser and undeserving of her love.  So she left him a note, telling him that she was headed for Hawaii and had filed for a divorce.”

Sobs.

“When she got to her hotel, she had a message from him telling her to forget about filing for a divorce he was going to kill himself instead.”

A long silence followed.  She sure had our attention!

“My hatred and prejudice killed a man yesterday; I don’t think I am going to be able to live with this knowledge.  I lost my little sister today; she probably will not ever speak to me again because she now understands how I have used her to ruin her life.”

Another long silence and she is now looking towards me.

“There are others in this audience I have equally harmed through my hatred.  I want to let you know how sorry I really am for what I have done to your life.”

And she broke down into a river of tears. Her husband was so much in shock he could not even react.  For me, I felt honestly sorry for her to have learned this lesson at such a cost.  But the worst of it was not over, yet.

Suddenly, many around me started pushing me towards her!  What did everyone on the planet know how she had convinced her daughter to annul our civil marriage, days before our religious wedding, and of the three years it took me to even trust a female again enough to ask one out?

I had wanted this woman as my mother-in-law, she was one of the first Christian women I had ever met and I was in many ways in awe of her.  Oh sure we had our differences, I had written them off as she was protecting her daughter and it was not personal.  But, when she killed my marriage, I learned it was personal.  Even though I had a great job, made good money, etc., that would never be enough for her  - because it would have still been me her daughter married.

I went to her, unwillingly, more shoved than walking.  But once in front of her, God’s Spirit overcame me and I could forgive her, and I told her so through my own tears.

I learned in that moment, I still loved her and how bad it still hurt to have lost her as a Christian mother in my life.

******************************

Decades later our paths were to cross again.  This time I had my four newly acquired kids from the Russia’s with me.  We stood and talked.  She told me about her daughter (most of it I already knew as I try to know how to best pray for her - through common friends).  She told me how sorry she was for what she had done to me and how obviously God had blessed me and not her daughter.  It was a very long, confusing and frightening conversation - to have someone bare their soul to you at such a level of transparency.

I felt very sorry for her.  Her guilt continues to haunt her heart and her pain remains an open sore.

I too still share in that pain, as I am sure everyone she had impacted has as well.

Worry

Today is the Tomorrow you worried about Yesterday

Luke 12:22-24
Worry is often not about what is important

Luke 12:25-28
     Worry does not change anything

Luke 12:29-31
Worry is the attitude of pagans

Luke 12:32-34
Worry less by collecting less to worry about

Worry says you want to be in control.

Faith says you will let God be in control.

Instead of worry – you can pray to have God help you to remember nothing is going to happen which He can not help you through…..

Bosnia Wants Me Dead

I am a guy.  I do not notice most things.  Like most guys, I usually am not thinking on much of anything either.  Like most guys I would never admit to anything else…

Friday night, Diedre wanted to go Christmas shopping and as I have a running car (for a change!), while hers continues to languish in her drive with a blown four wheel drive transaxle (they only made 83 of!), I took her to town.  Shopping!  Argh!  But, good to get out of the house, away from noisy kids and be with an adult for a change!

So, we were walking down a busy street looking in windows when suddenly she was at my side, slipping her arm in mine and squeezing it.  What the heck?  I could not see that by burying her nose in my armpit was going to be exactly a brilliant idea and I am sure she is not the current Canton armpit checker either.

“What are you doing?”

“Protecting you.”

“From what, terrorists?”

“No.”

“Muggers?”

“No.”

“Ah, police.”

“No.”

“Blonde ninja’s?”

“No.”  She laughed and wrinkled her nose.  “The girl who was eying you.”

“What girl?  Where?”  I was looking around.  Not often I get eyed by anything other than a Saint Bernard these days.

“Brown coat, badly dyed hair to match.  She looked hungry.”

She must have gone in a store as I could not see her.

“I have a few extra francs.  We could have bought her something….”

“No, no, no!  Not that kind of hungry!”

“What then?”

Diedre sighed, “Yes, she was probably a terrorist.”

“Where from?”  It does matter where your terrorist is from after all.

“She looked Bosnian.”  And caught herself too late.

(Bosnia was where my cousin was killed by paramilitary terrorists, as were those in his and the other medics’ care.  Although I had not even known about what happened to him yet, I was concerned enough about what was happening to the Christians that I and others implemented a plan to neutralize these groups and stop the killings.  There was a time when certain Bosnian elements had wanted a piece of me for this.  So, Bosnia is sort of a taboo subject around me.)

I pretended not to notice, just as I had pretended not to notice the brown haired looker only moments earlier when I had sucked in my gut.  But, if she was Bosnian…  I bit my lip and thought on this for a moment.

“Maybe she was a Romanian Gypsy and just wanted to lift my wallet?”

“I doubt it.”

Me too.  I carry my wallet in my front pants pocket so I am always aware of where it is and if anyone other than me is wanting it.

We walked in silence for a few more seconds.

“Oh, %$#$#@#@ !  My wallet is gone!”  She wailed…

Now where did she learn to talk like that!

Luckily, we stumbled across Timothy a little later, whom got to buy dinner for all of us.  As for Diedre’s wallet, she had dropped it in my car, we were to learn later…
